Overview of the role

Our Trainee Associate Program at CHECOD offers recent graduates professional experience in health economics and financing, priority setting, health policy and planning, and other areas of CHECOD’s core competencies. This career development program is for 12 months and is an entry-point for a career at CHECOD. Trainees must be resident in Abuja throughout the duration of the Program.

As our Trainee Associate, you will pass through series of rigorous trainings which will develop technical and productivity skills. You will also be exposed to our previous and current work so you gain sufficient knowledge of our core program areas. You will then use these skills and new knowledge on exciting projects with government health institutions and development partners.

The Program has four main components

  • Understanding core concepts in health economics and financing, policy and planning through courses and readings. You will regularly present what you have learnt using Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Understanding and applying methods for estimating health expenditure, costing healthcare services, and healthcare planning. You learn the software we use daily like Stata, Microsoft Excel, HAPT/HAAT, and OneHealth Tool.
  • Preparing activity or technical reports (or publications) on projects that are based on concepts and methods above. You will use Microsoft Word and a reference management software (Mendeley or Zotero).
  • Learning transferrable skills that help you become more productive at work. You will be familiar collaborating in OneDrive, team communication, video conferencing, and task management.

Selection criteria

This is an entry-level role so previous work experience is not required. However, all applicants must have

  • a bachelor’s in a relevant area (health/medical, economics, social sciences, statistics, other quantitative disciplines)
  • graduated with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) higher than 4.0/5.0 or its equivalent.
  • completed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) – exceptional corp members may contact us to explore options.
  • strong command of English language – we will test your written communication skills.
  • the ability to learn new concepts and find data or information from web resources.

We may favour applicants who graduated with a first class, distinction, or other equivalent grades at undergraduate or postgraduate level. We will also favour applicants with commitment to continuous learning and gaining skills as demonstrated by

  • having taken a course, completed a professional certification, or done training on generic research skills.
  • being proficient in use of Stata, Excel, or a programming language
  • being proficient in graphic design or data visualization.
